Canada: Fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity has a sweet side
Thanksgiving is already over in Canada--it’s celebrated the second Monday in October--so now our neighbors to the north are already preparing for Christmas festivities.
One of the most traditional takes place in Victoria, British Columbia, where the National Gingerbread Showcase will be staged Nov. 24-Jan. 1. Amateur and professional bakers will display their wares.
Last year’s competition had an international flair. Replicas of Paris’ Eiffel Tower and London’s Harrods department store stood beside a colorful beehive and an old-fashioned bookshop. All were made of edible ingredients.
Prizes for the best creations will be awarded in various categories, including a People’s Choice Award. Visitors who make a donation to Habitat for Humanity Victoria will be allowed to vote for their favorite.
Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase is hosted by the Inn at Laurel Point, a modern hotel on Victoria’s scenic Inner Harbour.
Throughout the Showcase, the hotel will offer a “gingerbread package†that includes a welcome amenity, free parking, overnight accommodation and dinner for two, including a gingerbread dessert. Rates start at $124.
Info: Inn at Laurel Point, (800) 663-7667.
