At Mammoth, skis and boards meet slopes in season opener

As early birds get their first runs in on the first day of the Mammoth ski season, a coming storm was looking increasingly likely to dump a few inches of fresh powder from late Thursday through Friday and Saturday.
The Mammoth Mountain ski area, which suffered through a scant snow season last year, opened a new chapter with the boarding of the season’s first chair lift at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Various festivities are planned through the weekend.
As skiers and boarders took their first runs from the resort’s chairlifts 1 (Broadway Express) and 3 (Face Lift Express) on mostly manufactured snow, the thermometer hovered around 33 degrees.
The ski area forecasts an 80% chance of snow Thursday night (with wind gusts up to 60 mph) and an 80% chance Friday, with 1-3 inches of snow accumulation possible each day. The resort’s Saturday forecast gives a 30% chance of snow.
Open trails on Thursday included Broadway, Main Park and Saddle Bowl.
