Maine: Dog days (and non-dog days) of summer, from William Wegman
Dog lovers, and William Wegman lovers, go East.
Weimaraners and Maine landscapes come together this summer in an exhibition from the man who put the dog breed on the art map. For the past three decades, the New England artist has spent summers in the Rangeley Lakes region in western Maine.
It’s the outdoors that gets top billing in “William Wegman: Hello Nature,†which is set to open Saturday at Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, Maine. The show displays more than 100 works, including photographs (yes, some with the dogs), videos, paintings and drawings, from the artist’s personal collection. Examples of works not usually associated with Wegman: paintings that insert postcards into a larger landscape, illustrations from nature books and collages.
It’s “the first exhibition to emphasize the connection to nature that runs through Wegman’s lengthy career—not just in his famed photographs of his Weimaraner dogs but across a wide range of media,†co-curator Kevin Salatino said in a statement about the show. (There’s a companion book too.)
The show runs through Oct. 21.
