Deep inside Lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona
By Jason La, Los Angeles Times staff writer
Just south of the Arizona side of Lake Powell is Lower Antelope Canyon, a maze of abstract shapes carved from sandstone by wind and water.
From above, the slot canyon looks like any other stretch of Arizona desert. But descending into this canyon, you feel as if youve stepped into some elaborate art installation. (Jason La / Los Angeles Times)
Light shines inside the slot canyon unevenly, casting spotlights in some places and shadows in others. (Jason La / Los Angeles Times)
In this photo, I threw sand in the air to enhance the light shafts streaming into the canyon.
(Unless you like the taste of sand, I dont recommend this technique.) (Jason La / Los Angeles Times)
The canyon is named after the antelope that used to roam its floor.
These days, furry caterpillars are about the only animal life youll see inside. (Jason La / Los Angeles Times)
