Amtrak’s flash sale takes 30% off spring and summer fares

Amtrak will take 30% off rail tickets for spring and summer travel nationwide, but only through Thursday. One-way sale fares on coach seats from Los Angeles are as low as $49 to Sacramento and $87 to Portland, Ore.
Other fares, each way, include $22 between Chicago and St. Louis, $25 between Seattle and Portland, and $69 between Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
Sale fares are good on some of the service’s most popular lines nationwide, including the California Zephyr, which runs between Chicago and the Bay Area, and the Coast Starlight, which travels between L.A. and Seattle.
Discount tickets are available for travel between March 11 and July 8, with no blackout dates. Amtrak trains offer free Wi-Fi and electronic chargers, and allow two carry-on bags and two personal items on board for free.
The flash sale is a nod to a travel industry promotion called National Plan for Vacation Day, marked on the last Tuesday in January. The U.S. Travel Assn.’s website says Americans failed to use 705 million vacation days last year and encourages more people to plan for their time off.
During the sale, discounts will be automatically applied to the standard fare (no need to enter a discount code).
