New Michelin travel guides cover London or Paris -- in just 25 pages

“Tut, tut! Miss Lucy! I hope we shall soon emancipate you from Baedeker,†Eleanor Lavish says to her charge, Lucy Honeychurch, who seems more taken with the must-have German guidebook of the day than the wonders of Florence in “A Room With a View.â€

The same could be said of today’s travelers who spend as much time looking down at their phones or tablets as they do at the sites.

Now tire company and guide publisher Michelin steps in with new Map & Guide books designed to orient travelers quickly to whatever neighborhood they’re in -- without having to consult an app.

So far, guides -- which Michelin started publishing in 1900 -- are available for Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Rome and Venice.

“We tried to make it almost as easy to use as an app,†spokesman Tony Fouladpour said via email. “That was the idea. Except with this you don’t need a connection or charged phone.â€

Guides come with fold-out maps and recommendations for things to see and tips on shopping, nightlife, dining, etc., in each city neighborhood -- all in 25 pages.

One warning about the size: The guides are described as “pocket-sized,†but pages are printed on heavy card stock and may not fit comfortably in everyone’s pockets.

They cost $9.95 each. You can find them for sale online at sites such as Barnes & Noble or Amazon, and in bookstores.
