San Diego’s US Grant to celebrate Sinatra in 3 concerts

The US Grant hotel in San Diego will honor what would have been Frank Sinatra’s centennial year with three concerts featuring crooner Richard Shelton and some of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ former bandmates.

Sinatra, born Dec. 12, 1915, never appeared at the US Grant, but the hotel remains in the centennial spirit while marking its own 105th year. The concerts will take place in the presidential ballroom at the hotel.

The concert series begins June 18 with “Behind Those Blue Eyes” and features musicians who played with Sinatra including Mike Lang on piano, Chuck Berghofer on bass and Gregg Field on drums.

The man who brings it all together is British actor and singer Richard Shelton, who will wear one of Sinatra’s tuxedos in performing his classic songs.

The second concert June 19, called “Frank’s Way,” features Shelton and Lang creating a club-like atmosphere with songs such as “One for My Baby” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”

Tickets for each concert cost $120 a person, and include Champagne and appetizers as well as a photo opportunity with Shelton.

The final concert June 20 is called “The Main Event, Our Way.” It reprises Sinatra’s 1974 return to the stage at New York’s Madison Square Garden and the live album/TV event.

Shelton will be accompanied by a 12-piece swing band in performing Sinatra’s original set at the show.

Tickets cost $165 a person and include a dinner reception, photo opportunity with Shelton, and a dance floor open until midnight.
