In Palm Springs, it’s back-to-school nights, and the subject is modernism
The Saguaro hotel in Palm Springs is offering a two-night stay that’s meant to school you in the city’s Midcentury Modern architecture.
It’s a fitting time to take a look.
L.A. Times writer Christopher Hawthorne says, in an appreciation of Palm Springs architect Donald Wexler, who died June 26 at the age of 89: “Palm Springs and California modernism came of age together right after the war. Its leading architects had a chance not just to build modern houses for new subdivisions but to give Palm Springs a public face, a civic personality.”
The Modern Immersion two-night stay at the Saguaro is being offered two weekends. It includes a 90-minute Essential Palm Springs Mod Squad tour with guide Kurt Cyr on Saturday morning or afternoon.
After the tour, you’ll also take a seat in the hotel’s kitchen with Cyr as he presents a “Mod Eats” cooking demonstration at 6 p.m. Saturday. The event is described as a “culinary journey” through 1950s and ‘60s food.
Welcome sangrias and margaritas are part of the package too.
The package, based on a two-night stay, is offered Aug. 21 and 22, with prices starting at $215 a night; and Oct. 9 and 10, starting at $323 a night. Prices don’t include a daily $25 resort fee and tax.
After the sampler weekend, you can take the plunge with Palm Springs’ Modernism Week Fall Preview (Oct. 9-12) and Modernism Week 2016 (Feb. 11-21).
