New way to watch dolphins, whales and more in Southern California
You have a new whale-watching option in Southern California; a new boat is sailing out of north San Diego County.
Oceanside Adventures, which began offering daily, year-round excursions on Wednesday, is sailing a new, 50-foot, single-deck catamaran that can accommodate up to 49 passengers.
The two-hour cruises depart from Oceanside Harbor.
Each year, about 20,000 gray whales migrate from feeding grounds in Alaska to breeding grounds in Baja California and back again.
Four of the state’s eight top places for whale watching are in Southern California: the Channel Islands and Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, according to Visit California.
Whales are the key attraction, but plenty of other marine mammals await in coastal waters, including dolphins, seals and sea lions.
Oceanside Adventures’ website tells which creatures are spotted each day. On Thursday, for instance, passengers saw scores of dolphins as well as a blue whale.
Info: Introductory fares are $39 for adults, $34 for seniors and military, and $29 for children 12 and younger. Reservations can be made online or by calling (888) 507-1130. Snacks and drinks are available onboard.
