Your next national park trip? Check out the destinations in this new Imax film
If you need inspiration for your next road trip, go see the new Imax film “National Parks Adventure.â€
The film, by Greg MacGillivray, whose Orange County-based movie company also produced “Everest,†was made to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service this year.
It opened Friday at selected sites in the U.S. (including L.A.) and abroad, and will continue to roll out to new locations throughout the year.
Parks featured in the 43-minute film include the big ones in the West like Glacier, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Bryce. But there are lesser-known ones you may want to put on your must-see list.
Climber Conrad Anker and his stepson Max drive the action in this film that also features:
-- A climbing perspective of Devils Tower National Monument in the Black Hills of Wyoming;
-- A dizzying mountain bike ride along the Slickrock Trail just outside Arches National Park in Moab, Utah; and
-- A bone-chilling ice climbing expedition in Picture Rocks National Lakeshore on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan in the dead of winter.
Robert Redford narrates the film, and there are touching re-enactments of Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir hunkering down in Yosemite to discuss protecting more public lands (which Roosevelt did, with the creation of five national parks and 18 national monuments).
The Imax 3-D version is playing at the California Science Center in downtown L.A. The film also opens March 18 at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Centre in San Diego.
