Major League Soccer to expand by four teams, to 24, by 2020
Major League Soccer said Wednesday night it plans to expand by four teams, to 24, by the 2020 season.
“We look forward to adding new partners with the same commitment to the sport and love of the game,†MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in making the announcement during the MLS All-Star Game in Kansas City.
The league said it already was in exploratory talks “with multiple markets and potential owners regarding future expansion.â€
There are two MLS teams in Southern California: The Galaxy, which has won the last two MLS championships, and Chivas USA.
Former Galaxy star David Beckham, who said he intends to invoke a contractual option to become a part owner of an MLS expansion franchise, has been scouting locations in Miami for much of the summer.
MLS, which does not have a team in the Southeast, reportedly would like to expand to at least one if not two cities in Florida.
