Robert Streb proved you don’t need all the clubs in your bag to shoot a good round of golf when he made five birdie putts on the back nine Sunday in the Greenbrier Classic to make a four-man playoff.

Streb insists that he didn’t mean to break his putter when he tossed it down after playing the ninth hole. The putter landed against the base of his golf bag, Streb said, snapping the head from the shaft.

“It hit the bottom of the bag and the head went flying,” Streb said. “It was not my intent, but that was what happened. And so I said, ‘Well, let’s see what we can do with a wedge.’”

Streb shot a four-under-par 32 on the back nine to qualify for the playoff. He finished with a final-round 65, making birdie putts at Nos. 10, 11, 13, 16 and 18.

He might have won the tournament in regulation had he not three-putted for a bogey at No. 17.

Streb was eliminated on the first playoff hole when his drive at the par-three 18th hole flew over the green. Before he could attempt his par putt after chipping onto the green, eventual winner Danny Lee sank a birdie putt.

Lee defeated David Hearn on the next playoff hole, the par-five 17th, with a par to win the tournament at White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
