David Wharton’s rim shots:
--Cue the highlight film if the top two seeds -- Kentucky and Duke -- end up playing each other. It’s been 20 years since that epic regional final when Christian Laettner scored at the buzzer to defeat the Wildcats.
--Indiana’s prospects took a big hit last week when senior point guard Verdell Jones III tore a ligament in his right knee during a Big Ten tournament victory over Penn State.
--Notre Dame had to replace four seniors from last season, then lost captain Tim Abromaitis to a knee injury, but still ranks near the top of the NCAA with a 1.47 assist-turnover ratio.
--Western Kentucky Athletic Director Ross Bjork, formerly of UCLA, fired Coach Ken McDonald at midseason. Good move -- assistant Ray Harper stepped in and led the Hilltoppers to four straight wins in the Sun Belt tournament.
