Jimmy Garoppolo could have been the next Tom Brady.

Remember how Brady got his start, by filling in for an injured Drew Bledsoe and leading the New England Patriots all the way to their first Super Bowl championship.

Or at least Garoppolo could have been the next Matt Cassel, who led the Patriots to 11 wins while Brady was injured for nearly all of the 2008 season.

Garoppolo has been preparing to start in Brady's place while the superstar quarterback served a four-game suspension for his role in the "Deflategate" scandal. The second-year backup hasn't looked bad either, completing 61 of 80 passes for 554 yards and two touchdowns during the preseason.

But now that a federal judge has erased that suspension ... well, it's back to the bench for Garoppolo.

That doesn't mean it's a return to oblivion for the guy, though. At least not Thursday, when Garoppolo memes, GIFs and comments are ruling social media.

Some people are comparing Garoppolo's plight to that of Peyton Manning's backup Brock Osweiler:

Here's another view. Check out Osweiler in the background:

Some others are feeling Garoppolo's pain this morning:

Those are all good. But here is, hands down, the best Garoppolo-themed post being sharing today:

Poor guy.
