Giants’ Jason Pierre-Paul reportedly injured while lighting fireworks

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was hospitalized after suffering injuries while lighting fireworks Saturday night, according to multiple media reports.

Pierre-Paul suffered burns to one of his hands and doctors were determining Sunday whether he suffered nerve damage, according to NFL.com. Multiple reports stated the injuries were not considered career-threatening.

On Saturday, multiple photos posted to Twitter indicated Pierre-Paul had a U-Haul van full of fireworks for a Fourth of July celebration in South Florida. A short time later, Pierre-Paul posted two videos to Instagram showing him standing in front of what appears to be the same van while making a reference to fireworks.

The Giants have not publicly responded to reports of Pierre-Paul’s injuries. However, NFL.com reported Monday that the team has withdrawn a multiyear, $60-million contract offer to Pierre-Paul in the wake of the incident.

New York used its franchise tag on the 26-year-old in March and he hasn’t signed its $14.8-million tender. The Giants retain Pierre-Paul’s rights under the franchise tag even though he technically isn’t under contract.

Pierre-Paul recorded 12.5 sacks, 77 tackles and three forced fumbles in 16 games with the Giants last season.
