On Sunday, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger are set to meet on the football field for only the third time since they were selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft, when Manning went first overall to the San Diego Chargers but was traded to the New York Giants that day and Roethlisberger was chosen 11th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

At first, it looked like the Steelers got the better deal as Roethlisberger went 13-0 as a starter during his rookie season. Their season ended in a loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship, but the young quarterback and his team rebounded to win the Super Bowl the following year.

Roethlisberger has led the Steelers to the Super Bowl two more times since then, with the team winning one of them. He has 14 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 101.4 passer rating this year, with 179 touchdowns, 103 interceptions and a 92.8 passer rating overall.

Manning took a little longer to get started but has since equaled Roethlisberger’s number of Super Bowl victories, earning MVP honors in both games, one of which came last season.

He has 12 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a passer rating of 89.1 this year, and 197 touchdowns, 137 interceptions and a passer rating of 82.6 overall.

So they both have two Super Bowl rings, fairly similar statistics and a knack for dramatic wins (both have engineered 28 game-winning drives), which leads us to head-to-head competition. Not surprisingly, the score there is 1-1, which makes Sunday’s game a rubber match of sorts.
