Chivas USA names Colorado assistant Wilmer Cabrera as head coach

Chivas USA on Thursday named Wilmer Cabrera, formerly assistant coach with the Colorado Rapids, as its new head coach.
Cabrera, 46, will be the latest in a string of head coaches hoping to turn around Chivas USA, which finished the 2013 season last in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with a record of 6-20-8.
He succeeds Jose Luis Real, who returned to the team’s parent Mexican league club Chivas of Guadalajara.
Under Real, who had taken over last May, Chivas USA had three wins, six draws and 12 losses. Chivas USA’s home stadium is StubHub Center in Carson, which it shares with the Galaxy.
“I’m really excited and motivated to be joining Chivas USA,” Cabrera said in a statement. “It’s a big opportunity to join an MLS professional club and an institution that wants to be one of the top teams in the league.”
Terms of his contract were not disclosed.
Before joining Colorado in 2012, Cabrera spent five years coaching the U.S. men’s under-17 team. Earlier the Colombian was a professional player, spending much of his career in Colombia’s Division A.
