U.S. World Cup championship still not as coveted as college-pro title

It seems as if everyone in America has soccer fever after the excellent play by the U.S. at the World Cup, but the newfound love has limits.

Despite the bonding of fans because of the team’s advancement to the round of 16, where it takes on Belgium on Tuesday, an ESPN poll shows that a majority of people would prefer that their favorite college or professional team win a championship than the U.S. win the World Cup.

As of 8:30 p.m. PDT, 57% of the 226,434 people who voted were in favor of trading a U.S. victory for one by their favorite team.

Connecticut, Vermont and Hawaii were the only states where votes were in favor of a U.S. World Cup victory.

It was 50% in New York and Massachusetts.

This marks the third time in four World Cup tournaments that the U.S. has advanced beyond the group stage.
