Those who have suggested Texas A&M; Coach Kevin Sumlin was USC’s top coaching choice may have been right -- but Sumlin is apparently not coming to USC.

A good sign someone is making a run at a coach is if that coach’s school suddenly signs him to a multiyear extension just hours before a big game against, say, Missouri.

That happened Saturday when it was reported Sumlin had agreed on a new, six-year contract to stay at Texas A&M.;

“Coach Sumlin has demonstrated why he is considered among the nation’s elite football coaches. His coaching and recruiting abilities are only secondary to his integrity, class and passion for his student-athletes and this university,†Aggies director of athletics Eric Hyman said in a statement. “Texas A&M; is making a sincere commitment to Kevin. We are fortunate that he is committed to remain an Aggie for a long time to come, and we are excited about what the future has in store.â€

Sumlin was considered a logical choice to be considered for the vacancy at USC, which fired Lane Kiffin earlier this season.

Texas A&M; is 19-5 in two seasons under Sumlin. The Aggies are 8-3 entering Saturday’s game at Missouri.
