Times’ lineman of the year: Max Tuerk of Santa Margarita
There was never any doubt about the value of 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman Max Tuerk to the Santa Margarita football team. When the Eagles had one final play to win the CIF state championship Division I bowl game, they turned to Tuerk.
Quarterback Johnny Stanton, on fourth and goal from the one, ran behind Tuerk to score a touchdown and deliver a victory against San Jose Bellarmine at the Home Depot Center.
It was fitting ending for Tuerk, who has been selected The Times’ lineman of the year.
The USC-bound Tuerk began the season as a consensus top lineman and only enhanced his reputation as the season progressed.
“I’ve had some wonderful players,†Coach Harry Welch said. “I’ve never had someone receive so many accolades and play better and better every week.â€
