Before games, Mission Hills Alemany Coach Tray Meeks would put on headphones, listen to music and do some dancing as if he were firing himself up for the basketball game like his players. And he was.

Meeks, 35, in his seventh season as coach, helped deliver the first Southern Section and state championships since the school opened in 1956. Equally impressive was the Warriors (33-4) winning the Mission League and knocking off powers Los Angeles Loyola and Encino Crespi.

For helping pull off the greatest basketball season in school history, Meeks has been named the boys’ Coach of the Year by The Times.

“He deserves it,†standout senior point guard Max Guercy said. “He did an awesome job. He had a team with a lot of talent and one of the things he did was keep everybody happy. He gets on us at practice, and we work hard. He’s prepared. This whole season, we saw every team [on video] before we played them.â€

Meeks said he tried to sell his players on being selfless.

“We stood with one motto, and that was taking the best shot for the team and not the best shot for you,†he said.
