Update: The Galaxy will enter Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League match in third place in the group standings and in need of a favorable result to avoid the possibility of elimination. A loss or a tie against Mexican club Morelia on Wednesday, combined with an Alajuelense victory over winless Motagua of Honduras on Thursday, would end the Galaxy’s bid for a quarterfinal berth. If the Galaxy loses, Costa Rica’s Alajuelense would need only a draw to advance. The Galaxy finds itself with its back to the wall after conceding two goals in the final seven minutes of a loss to Morelia two weeks ago in Mexico. The Galaxy followed that eight days later with a 1-0 loss in Costa Rica. Plus, the Galaxy will be without midfielder David Beckham, who is out after getting his second yellow card of the tournament last week against Alajuelense. That’s the bad news. Here’s the good: The Galaxy has not lost at home in either CONCACAF or MLS play this year and with a win Wednesday it would need only a victory over last-place Motagua next month to punch its own ticket to the next round of Champions League play.
