Indy Point wins John Henry Turf at Santa Anita

Indy Point won the $150,000 John Henry Turf Championship by 11/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Sunday, giving jockey Gary Stevens his third graded stakes win of the weekend.

Argentina-bred Indy Point ran 11/4 miles in 1:57.47 and paid $6, $4.40 and $2.80 as the 2-1 favorite against 11 rivals in the Grade II race.

Ireland-bred Vagabond Shoes returned $6.40 and $4.40, and Lucayan was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $4.40 to show.

The victory, worth $90,000, increased Indy Point’s career earnings to $659,061, with seven wins in 15 starts.

Lynx, Dream reach finals

Maya Moore scored 27 points, Seimone Augustus had 22, and the visiting Minnesota Lynx beat the Phoenix Mercury, 72-65, to advance to the WNBA finals for the third straight year with a sweep in the best-of-three Western Conference finals.

Minnesota will open the finals next Sunday at home against Atlanta, which completed its sweep of Indiana earlier Sunday.

Diana Taurasi had 21 points for Phoenix but was six for 21 from the field, and No. 1 draft pick Brittney Griner was held to six points and 10 rebounds.

Angel McCoughtry led Atlanta to its third WNBA finals spot in four years, scoring 27 points in the Dream’s 67-53 victory over the Indiana Fever at Indianapolis.

Tamika Catchings led Indiana with 24 points and six rebounds.

Kirk Triplett successfully defended his First Tee Open title at Pebble Beach, closing with a four-under-par 68 for a two-stroke victory over Doug Garwood and Dan Forsman.

Three strokes behind leader Tom Lehman entering the round, Triplett finished at 11-under 205 for his second Champions Tour title. Last year, the three-time PGA Tour winner overcame a four-shot deficit.

Garwood, a Monday qualifier making his fourth start on the 50-and-over tour, and Forsman each shot 69. Lehman was fourth at eight under after a 74.

England’s David Howell ended a seven-year victory drought with a playoff win over American Peter Uihlein in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland.

The former Ryder Cup player won with a 12-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Howell closed with a five-under 67 to match Uihlein at 23-under 265. Uihlein shot 69.

Howell beat Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the inaugural HSBC Champions and has played more than 200 tournaments since his last victory in the BMW Championship later that year.

John Force raced to his record 136th victory and moved into position for a 16th funny car season title in the NHRA Midwest Nationals at Madison, Ill.

The 64-year-old Force won for the second time this year, beating defending series champion Jack Beckman with a 4.097-second run at 310.13 mph in a Ford Mustang. Beckman had a 4.127 at 309.84 in a Dodge Charger.

Force is six points behind leader Matt Hagan with three events left.

Antron Brown won in top fuel, Erica Enders-Stevens topped the pro stock field, and Matt Smith won in pro stock motorcycle.
