Washington Nationals’ ever humble Bryce Harper says: “We’re the team to beat. Everybody knows that.”

—Craig Counsell, upon his introduction as Milwaukee Brewers manager. Counsell, a utility infielder and career .255 hitter, had 500 at-bats in one of his 16 seasons in the major leagues.

—Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals outfielder, after he hit three home runs Wednesday to power the Nationals to their seventh victory in nine games. That gave the Nationals a 14-15 record. Washington led the National League with 96 victories last season.
“It is incredible how well a 2-year-old can handle this and deal with it. I don’t think I’d be able to do it. And I’m 32.”
—John Axford, Colorado Rockies pitcher, on his son, Jameson, who became seriously ill after two rattlesnake bites in spring training. Jameson, who is undergoing skin-graft treatment and trying to regain mobility, threw out the first pitch from a wheelchair Friday.
