David Hays’ pitching leads St. John Bosco past Mira Costa 1-0
Nevada coach TJ Bruce is quite a recruiter. Two years ago, he took away pitcher Jake Jackson from El Toro. Last year it was pitcher Owen Sharts from Simi Valley. And this year, he signed pitcher David Hays from St. John Bosco.
On Monday, Hays threw a two-hit shutout of No. 2-ranked Mira Costa 1-0. He struck out nine to outduel UCLA-bound Jared Karros, who struck out eight in six innings. St. John Bosco is 3-1.
“He gave us fits,†Mira Costa coach Keith Ramsey said.
Bishop Amat 4, Santa Margarita 3: The Lancers broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh. Micah Hidalgo had an RBI triple. Jonny Giannola hit a three-run home run for Santa Margarita.
Santa Ana Mater Dei 1, Capistrano Valley 0: The Monarchs (3-0) knocked off the defending Division 1 champs. Anthony Chiaramonte struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
JSerra 5, Tesoro 1: Luke Jewett hit two home runs and Blake Klassen added another home run for the Lions (2-0).
Marina 3, El Modena 2: Braden Wylde’s walk-off RBI double in the seventh inning lifted Marina to victory. Kyle Rasmussen went four for four for El Modena.
Newport Harbor 4, Esperanza 3: Kelly Austin struck out 10 for Newport Harbor.
Villa Park 4, Downey 0: Isaac Ontiveros threw five shutout innings for the Spartans.
Vista Murrieta 7, Fountain Valley 2: Anthony Tulimero and Zach Rodriguez each had two hits for Vista Murrieta.
Hart 4, Thousand Oaks 3: Jakob Marquez hit a home run for the Indians.
El Dorado 10, Pacifica 0: Corbin Ellis hit a home run and Parket Haskell pitched El Dorado to its first win.
Ayala 10, Yorba Linda 0: Joe Naranjo struck out six and allowed one hit in five innings and also contributed two hits.
St. Paul 15, La Habra 3: Gibby Casas hit a home run and finished with three RBIs.
Mission Viejo 2, Servite 1: Hayden Cody struck out six in a complete-game performance. Aaron Casillas and Jack Haggerty each had two hits.
La Mirada 3, Dana Hills 2: The Matadores advanced in the Loara tournament. Isaiah Lopez Del Haro allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings.
Anaheim Canyon 6, Aliso Niguel 0: William St. Marseille scattered seven hits in six scoreless innings.
Edison 11, Loara 1: Kevin Hultgren allowed one run over five innings and struck out seven. Blake Morton contributed two hits.
Chaminade 8, Royal 3: Maddox Latta went three for four with two RBIs and Oskar Stark added two hits for the Eagles.
Yucaipa 4, Chino Hills 3: Yucaipa improved to 2-0. Anthony Gibbons hit a two-run triple to tie the game and Trent Lutheran got the game-winning hit.
El Toro 4, Los Alamitos 2: The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning for the victory. Shayne Simpson had two hits and two RBIs.
Rio Mesa 10, St. Francis 5: Doyle Kane had three hits for St. Francis and is seven for 13 this season.
Cerritos 8, Whittier 1: Mathew Pinal threw five innings to pick up the win.
Trabuco Hills 8, Placentia Valencia 0: Mason Molina struck out six in 3 1/3 innings.
