Boys’ basketball: El Camino Real wins City Division I title

Evan Wardlow had 15 points, Julian Richardson had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Maleke Haynes added 14 points for El Camino Real, which upset top-seeded Westchester, 58-56, to win the City Section Division I boys’ basketball championship tonight at L.A. Southwest College.
Elijah Stewart had 29 points for Westchester, including a three-pointer that cut the Comets’ deficit to two points with 26 seconds left. Layon Gooden added seven points for the Comets (28-6), who were vying for their 13th City title under Coach Ed Azzam.
Westchester led 26-25 at halftime but the second-seeded Conquistadores (25-6) entered the fourth quarter with an eight-point lead.
Both teams could be given berths into the state Open Division playoffs. Seedings will be released Sunday.
