There’s going to be a new No. 1 team in girls’ basketball in California after West Hills Chaminade knocked off No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei, 60-59, in the championship game of the Palisades tournament on Saturday night.
Paige Fecske delivered the winning layup for the Eagles (4-0), who were able to deal with Mater Dei’s press and top player Katie Lou Samuelson.
Chaminade, led by Valerie Higgins, was expected to have one of the Southland’s top teams after winning the state Division III championship last season and picking up Mater Dei transfer Leonna Odom.
Higgins, a junior, finished with 20 points and was named tournament MVP. Odom added 14 points. Samuelson had 27 points for Mater Dei (3-1).
