The preliminaries are over for Loyola. Mission League play begins next week with a home game against Gardena Serra.
The Cubs are right where they were a year ago, finishing their nonleague season with a 4-0 record after a 52-22 win over Salesian on Thursday night.
Now they have to prove they have made progress. Last season, they didn’t win the rest of the year and finished 4-6.
This is a different team with an improving junior quarterback in Sean O’Malley, who ran for two touchdowns and passed 57 yards to Kelly Blake and 55 yards to David Long in helping Loyola open a 42-14 halftime lead.
The one positive for Salesian was the play of junior Deommodore Lenoir. Showing off lots of speed, he returned a kickoff for a touchdown and made a couple long receptions at receiver.
Lenoir served as good preparation for what the Cubs will encounter next week against Serra.
