Football: Dorsey, San Pedro get in their hits [Video]

Dorsey and San Pedro, two longtime City Section powers, played in a scrimmage on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Both schools were hitting hard on defense while trying to get their offenses in gear.

San Pedro will probably start its first sophomore at quarterback in Coach Mike Walsh’s 23 seasons. Jacob Miller played with poise and confidence. The Pirates will be relying on Pete Palacios at running back and linebacker.

Dorsey quarterback Noah Whitney didn’t have his standout receiver, David Williams (sidelined with an injury), but he showed the ability to pass when given time to throw.

The key for the Dons will be their offensive line. They struggled to run the ball up the middle against the Pirates, a problem they’ve had in recent years. Unless that is solved, they could have problems when facing top teams on their schedule.

The defense is young, quick and enthusiastic for the Dons. San Pedro opens at Morro Bay next week, a 4 1/2-hour bus ride. Dorsey plays at Fairfax on Sept. 6.
