Football: Cathedral wins appeal; new seven-team Serra League voted in
The Southern Section Council voted Wednesday to accept the appeal of Cathedral and created a new seven-team Serra League that will be made up of Alemany, Chaminade, Crespi, Notre Dame, Bishop Amat, Loyola and Gardena Serra for football only.
The Mission League will be Harvard-Westlake, La Salle, Salesian, Cathedral, St. Francis and St. Paul.
The Catholic Athletic Assn. had created two four-team leagues, but Cathedral was able to convince Council members that because of competitive equity, it did not belong in a four-team league made up of Loyola, Bishop Amat and Serra.
The decision is expected to anger CAA members who had voted consistently to have two four-team leagues. But the decision on Wednesday is final and lasts for four years.
“It’s unbelievable,†Serra Athletic Director Ted Dunlap said. “We’re totally baffled.â€
Schools will have to scramble to finalize their football schedules that already had been mostly decided.
