In City Section Division I, there’s no running back making a bigger impact than junior Sterling Salguero of Birmingham. The Patriots have decided to let Salguero carry the ball again and again and he’s delivering.
He has scored 18 touchdowns in his last six games, including rushing for 338 yards in 32 carries and scoring four touchdowns in a playoff win over Banning last week.
“He’s an All-City guy,” Coach Jim Rose said.
Over his last five games, he had 287 yards rushing against El Camino; 166 yards against Cleveland; 147 yards against Chatsworth; 243 yards against Taft, and 150 yards against Granada Hills.
Birmngham (6-5) has won six consecutive games and should offer a strong challenge to No. 2-seeded Garfield on Friday night at Garfield.
“I think it’s going to be a physical game,” Rose said.
