Give Coach Dean Herrington a competent quarterback, some quick receivers, a top running back and a line that can block and you get what happened on Thursday night, with Alemany blowing out Chaminade, 55-38.
Quarterback Blake Green passed for a school-record 437 yards. Dominic Davis scored five touchdowns. Brandon Pierce had 167 yards receiving. The Warriors are 5-0 and 1-0 in the Mission League. Their War Zone was very happy.
For Chaminade (4-1, 1-1), defensive issues were exposed. They’ll need to be fixed in the coming weeks. But Chaminade has the best freshman around in TJ Pledger. “He’s going to be unbelievable,” Herrington said after watching Pledger rush for 136 yards and score two touchdowns.
In other games, Tesoro (5-1) won its fifth consecutive game with a 59-38 thumping of San Clemente. Quarterback Devon Modster is a rising junior prospect.
Corona Centennial might be the hottest, most feared team in Southern California. The Huskies picked up a 72-42 win over Valencia. Now they’re going to probably breeze through Big VIII League play in preparation for the Pac-5 playoffs.
Reseda Cleveland is 5-0 going into next week’s West Valley League play after a shutout win over Fremont.
St. Francis and Thousand Oaks stayed unbeaten with convincing wins over Calabasas and Agoura, respectively.
And, in the biggest surprise of the night, No. 1 Mater Dei barely survived in a 28-27 victory over Westlake in which kicker Kevin Robledo’s 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked as time expired. The Monarchs get to rest up for a Trinity League opener next week against St. John Bosco.
