Boys’ basketball: Loyola to face test in San Diego as tournaments begin
Finals are done, school is out and now it’s a weekend of nonstop basketball, with tournaments galore set to begin on the day after Christmas.
Unbeaten Loyola, ranked No. 3 by The Times, will be in San Diego beginning Thursday in the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High, and the Cubs will be tested. First up is game against Sheldon, then a likely second-round matchup against unbeaten Sierra Canyon. Also in the tournament is No. 4 Corona Centennial, which opens against Cantwell-Sacred Heart.
Chino Hills, Mayfair and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd are also in the tournament.
No. 2 Etiwanda, No. 10 Westchester, plus Long Beach Poly, Harvard-Weslake and Beverly Hills, are among the teams in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Rancho Mirage.
At Chaminade, the host Eagles, Valencia and Eastside Catholic top the 16-team field.
At Hart, the 8-1 Indians will face competition from unbeaten Village Christian and Righetti, led by talented 6-foot-7 junior Cameron Walker.
No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei will be playing in the Orange Holiday Classic at Hope International in Fullerton.
Westlake is hosting the Hardwood Invitational that includes Santa Monica, West Ranch, Bullard and Rancho Verde.
The National Prep Classic in Santa Maria begins on Friday and includes Woodland Hills El Camino Real.
