Boys’ basketball: Chaminade defeats Crespi in overtime thriller
Student sections roar at Crespi
There was an overflow crowd on Wednesday night at Crespi for a Mission League showdown against Chaminade. The student sections were roaring loudly and kept chanting, “I believe that we will win.†But no one really knew who was going to win.
The game was tied at 15, 17, 19, 25, 33, 36, 41, 43, 48, 50 and 60-60 after regulation. It was tied, 64-64, with 2.7 seconds left in overtime when Michael Oguine of Chaminade made one of two free throws. When Crespi’s final shot attempt failed, the Eagles came away with a 65-64 victory. That means there are no teams left in the Mission League with zero losses.
Chaminade is 15-2 and 2-1. Crespi is 13-5 and 2-1.
Jordan Ogundiran and Oguine of Chaminade scored all of their team’s points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Ogundiran finished with a career-high 31 points, including seven three-pointers. Oguine had 27 points.
“There is battle every night in the Mission League,†Chaminade Coach Todd Wolfson said. “They were putting so much attention on Michael we told Jordan, ‘It’s your game.’â€
De’Anthony Melton scored 21 points and Mike Krkeyan had 19 points for Crespi.
Chaminade students charged onto the court to celebrate when the final buzzer sounded in overtime. Then they started chanting, “I believe we just won.â€
The rematch is Feb. 4 at Chaminade.
Alemany defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 56-45. Kevin Summers had 12 points and 15 rebounds. Harvard-Westlake defeated St. Francis, 53-42. Alex Copeland had 20 points.
