Boys’ basketball: Brentwood (11-1) is looking good but tough games ahead

They’re celebrating at Brentwood, which improved to 11-1 and finished off 2014 by winning its division of the MaxPreps tournament on Tuesday with a 73-42 win over Washington Foss.
Ountae Campbell scored 16 points and was selected tournament MVP. Maxwell Kupchak scored 29 points and joined teammate Andrew Gardiner on the all-tournament team.
Now Coach Ryan Bailey has to figure out a plan to deal with teams in the powerful Gold Coast League. Ahead will be showdown games with the likes of Sierra Canyon, Windward, Campbell Hall, Viewpoint and Paraclete, all of whom have shown they can play good basketball. Campbell Hall won the third-place game of the La Salle tournament, defeating Village Christian, 69-58. Aaron Holiday scored 33 points.
There’s going to be weekly down-to-the final second games beginning Jan. 9. And Brentwood figures to be strengthened on Jan. 5 when 6-foot-8 Harvard-Westlake transfer Nick Medavoy becomes eligible.
Yes, there’s lots of reasons for Brentwood fans to be excited but many challenges ahead.
