All high schools would be fortunate to have a No. 2 pitcher as talented as senior Chris Kovach of Simi Valley Royal.
He’s showing signs of being a standout this season, improving to 3-1 on Friday while lowering his ERA to 1.50 in a 4-1 Marmonte League victory over Calabasas. He struck out five, walked one and allowed six hits in five innings. His fastball was clocked at 86 mph in the first inning.
Royal is 10-1 this season and the combination of left-hander Kurt Johnson (4-0) and the right-handed Kovach makes the Highlanders a formidable team the rest of the way in league play.
