Logan Pouelsen, a sophomore at Huntington Beach High, helped the USA 15U national baseball team win the gold medal at the COPABE Pan American Games on Sunday, retiring three consecutive batters in the seventh inning in relief, two by strikeouts, to preserve a 6-1 victory over Cuba in Colombia.
What a week it was for a USA team that received a three-run home run from Andrew Vaughn.
The Southern California contingent made major contributions. Starters on Sunday included shortstop Chase Strumpf from JSerra, outfielder Christian Moya from Bishop Amat, infielder Isaak Gutierrez from St. John Bosco and first baseman Blake Sabol from Aliso Niguel.
Strumpf, a sophomore, hit five home runs in the tournament and was named tournament MVP.
Also contributing was pitcher Nick Pratto from Mater Dei and infielder-pitcher Manuel Perez from Corona Centennial.
The head coach for the team was Tom Meusborn, who won eight City Section championships at Chatsworth and will become an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge.
An assistant coach was Matt LaCour, the head coach at Studio City Harvard-Westlake who won the Southern Section Division 1 championship this past season.
