Baseball: El Camino Real wins its eighth City title, 4-3
Matt Malconian’s stellar relief pitching keys win
With Matt Malconian throwing 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief, El Camino Real won its eighth City Section Division I baseball championship, defeating Cleveland, 4-3, on Saturday at Dodger Stadium.
The Conquistadores (27-7) opened a 4-0 lead, saw Cleveland close to 4-3, then called upon Malconian with one out in the fourth. He struck out four, walked one and gave up two hits. During the playoffs, he had two saves and a win.
Sam Villa shut down El Camino Real after the second inning, striking out three and walking none. Cleveland (24-12) had runners on second and third in the top of the sixth with one out but Malconian came through with consecutive strikeouts.
Ben Kaser finished with three hits for Cleveland. Dylan Hirsch had three hits for El Camino Real.
It’s the 42nd time in the last 43 seasons that a San Fernando Valley team has won the Division I title.
