Baseball: Dorsey earns first City title appearance in 42 years
Dons defeat South East, 8-5
The Dorsey Dons haven’t won a City Section baseball championship since 1958 and haven’t appeared in a final since 1972. But one drought has definitely ended.
On Monday night at USC, the Dons earned a spot in Saturday’s 10 a.m. Division II championship game at Dodger Stadium with an 8-5 victory over South East.
Noah Whitney, the quarterback for the football team, allowed three hits in six innings. Dorsey had 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning, keyed by a two-run triple by Alex Aguirre. Lem Parker led the hitting attack with two singles and a triple. Aguirre also had three hits.
Whitney, who will play college football and baseball at Redlands, said of playing Van Nuys in Saturday’s final, “It’s going to be a great opportunity. That’s all L.A. players dream about playing at Dodger Stadium. We worked our butts off just to get here.â€
The team has dedicated its season to Dorsey student Jennifer Bonilla, who died last April in a bus crash in Northern California of students headed to visit Humboldt State.
David Lamas came in to pitch the seventh to get the save. The Dons improved to 21-4.
