Fairfax and Westchester are set for Round 2 in their regular-season rivalry
Round 2 of the Fairfax-Westchester basketball rivalry is set for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Faifax, with the No. 1 seed in the City Section Open Division playoffs on the line.
Fairfax (22-1) held on for a 50-48 victory over Westchester (20-2) on Friday night. On Wednesday, each team tuned up. Westchester received 29 points from Kaelen Allen in a 70-29 win over Hamilton. Fairfax defeated LACES 106-43. Barry Wilds Jr. scored 26 points and Keith Dinwiddie 22.
University probably ruined any chance of Palisades making the Open Division playoffs with a 51-47 upset win over the Dolphins. David Cheatom scored 17 points.
South Gate (17-9, 10-0) wrapped up the Eastern League championship with a 50-37 win over Bell. Bruno Escarzaga scored 18 points.
Chayce Polynice had 30 points and 20 rebounds in Grant’s 68-54 win over Verdugo Hills.
Former Taft girls’ basketball player Shawn Kolani, the sister of former Laker Jordan Farmar, served as head coach for Taft (Derrick Taylor was sick) in the Toreadors’ 74-38 win over Chatsworth.
Brandon Wilson scored 16 points. El Camino Real defeated Granada Hills 61-52. Jahville Collins scored 23 points.
Birmingham defeated Cleveland 75-60. Corey Cofield scored 28 points and had 13 rebounds.
In the Baseline League, Etiwanda rallied from a 19-point deficit to clinch the league championship with a 58-56 win over Damien. Camren Pierce’s layup was the game-winner. Etiwanda is 9-0 in league. Damien received 28 points from Malik Thomas.
Rancho Cucamonga defeated Los Osos 62-56.
St. Francis rallied for 91-82 win over Alemany. Andre Henry (22 points), Dennis Flowers (20) and Jason Gallant (20) led the Golden Knights, who are 22-6 and could be left out of 3-AA playoffs if there are no at-large teams.
In the Trinity League, Mater Dei clinched a share of the league title with a 78-55 win over Orange Lutheran. Devin Askew scored 16 points.
JSerra earned an automatic playoff berth with a 59-54 win over Santa Margarita.
Newport Harbor forced a four-way tie in the Surf League with a 54-29 win over Corona del Mar. Sam Barela made five three-pointers and had 16 points.
Crenshaw defeated View Park Prep 72-64 in the Coliseum League.
Zack Muller scored 42 points to help Shalhevet win the Mulholland League championship with a 72-60 win over Da Vinci. Shalhevet is 21-6.
Crossroads defeated Viewpoint 58-45. Yuuki Okubo had 18 points.
Rancho Verde locked up an Open Division playoff berth with a 69-50 win over Riverside Notre Dame.
