Austin Barnes gives Dodgers the lead after eight innings

Eighth inning

Phillies: Caleb Ferguson now pitching for the Dodgers. Brandon Marsh struck out swinging. Edmundo Sosa flied to right. Garrett Stubbs popped to short.

Dodgers: Left-hander José Alvarado now pitching for the Phillies. Max Muncy fouled to third. Miguel Rojas, batting for Jason Heyward, singled to left. James Outman doubled to left, Rojas to third. Miguel Vargas grounded to short. The infield was in, and Rojas was thrown out at home. It looked like Stubbs was illegally blocking home plate. The Dodgers challenged, but were unsuccessful. It looked very similar to the way Austin Wynns was blocking the plate last week, and that was called an illegal block. Vargas took second on defensive indifference, which made no sense because on the next pitch, Austin Barnes, batting for David Peralta, singled to left, scoring both runners and giving the Dodgers the lead. With Chris Taylor at the plate, Barnes was caught stealing.

Dodgers option Alex Vesia after woeful start to season

Last year, Alex Vesia was the most trusted left-handed reliever in the Dodgers bullpen.

This year, barely a month into the campaign, he failed to hold onto to any major-league spot.

In the corresponding move for Gavin Stone’s promotion on Wednesday, the Dodgers option Vesia to triple A Oklahoma City.

It was a sensible move. After posting a 2.15 ERA in 63 appearances last year, Vesia had struggled mightily in 13 outings this campaign.

He had a 7.84 ERA and stunning 2.806 walks and hits per innings. He was struggling to land his trademark slider, and seemed at times to have problems adjusting to quickened pace of MLB’s new pitch clock.

Manager Dave Roberts said the team is still probably at their best with an effective Vesia available at the back end of games. But his struggles had become so pronounced — especially with fellow left-handers Caleb Ferguson and Victor González getting off to strong starts this year — the club decision a demotion back to the minors was the best course forward.

“He just wasn’t as consistent as we need him to be, as we’ve seen him,†Roberts said. “Right now, he just needs to catch his breath ... [and try] to get him back to being the pitcher that we know he’s capable of.â€

Gavin Stone set for MLB debut after rapid rise with Dodgers: ‘There’s that bulldog in him’

The first time Dodgers minor league pitching director Rob Hill saw Gavin Stone in person, he had a similar impression as most.

The right-hander was undersized, his slight frame belying a generous 6-foot-1, 175-pound listing.

He had a limited college resume, only starting 11 games while serving largely as a reliever at mid-major Central Arkansas.

And he was selected in the fifth and final round of the pandemic-shortened 2020 MLB draft, so Stone didn’t pop at first glance the same way some other, more highly-touted Dodgers prospects did.

“Everyone, to a man, was like, ‘Dude, he’s really small. Really small,’†Hill recalled. “And the first time I laid eyes on him in spring in 2021, I was like, ‘Whoa. OK. Yeah.’â€

The more time Hill and the Dodgers spent around Stone, however, the more they recognized all the other attributes that made the pitcher a potential star.

Julio Urías engages ‘attack mode’ and strikes out 10 as Dodgers rout Phillies

Julio Urías snapped off a slurve. Bryce Harper swung through it. And Dodger Stadium organist Dieter Rhule immediately pounded his keys.

As Harper returned to the dugout, the catchy “Welcome Back†theme song echoed around Chavez Ravine.

It was directed toward Harper, who was making his season debut Tuesday night just six months after an offseason Tommy John surgery.

The jingle, however, worked as a fitting tune for Urías’ performance in the Dodgers’ 13-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies too.
