Dodgers complete sweep of Atlanta Braves in 2-1 win

AT THE PLATE: Adrian Gonzalez drove in his team-leading 71st run, doubling to right-center field in the first inning to score Yasiel Puig from first base to move the Dodgers in front, 1-0. Gonzalez ranks second in the National League in runs batted in. Puig doubled the Dodgers’ lead to 2-0 in the third inning, smashing a slider from Braves starter Julio Teheran over the left-center field wall for a solo home run. The home run was Puig’s 13th. Teheran pitched well, limiting the Dodgers to two runs and five hits over eight innings.

ON THE MOUND: Clayton Kershaw extended his unbeaten streak to 11 starts and won his 10th consecutive decision, limiting the Braves to one run and seven hits in a complete game. Kershaw, who pitched a shutout in San Francisco five days earlier, threw consecutive complete games for only the second time in his career. The first time was in 2011, when he pitched complete games on June 20 against the Detroit Tigers and June 26 against the Angels.

KEY MOMENT: With the Dodgers holding a 2-0 lead, Kershaw gave up consecutive singles to Evan Gattis and Ryan Doumit to start the fifth inning. But Kershaw forced Andrelton Simmons to ground into a double play, with Juan Uribe recording a force out at third base and throwing out Doumit at second. Kershaw struck out Phil Gosselin to end the inning.

EXTRA BASES: The Dodgers swept the Braves in a series of three or more games for the first time since a four-game sweep from July 26-29, 1990, at Dodger Stadium. … The Dodgers are 15-5 in their last 20 home games. … Left-hander Scott Elbert cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to triple-A Albuquerque. … Shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena started serving a five-game suspension with triple-A Albuquerque. Arruebarrena started a brawl while on a minor league rehabilitation assignment last week. … The Dodgers’ game Saturday against the Chicago Cubs is sold out. … Comedian Martin Lawrence will throw out the ceremonial first pitch Sunday at Dodger Stadium.
