Dodgers have no answer for Madison Bumgarner, Giants in 4-2 loss

Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner shut down the Dodgers’ offense for most of the game Saturday afternoon in a 4-2 San Francisco win.

The Giants scored all the runs they needed in the second inning, putting a three-spot up on the board against Dodgers starter Stephen Fife.

Bumgarner gave up just two runs on three hits and no walks in seven innings. He struck out nine and also drove in two runs. He retired the first 14 Dodger batters before Andre Ethier singled with two outs in the fifth. Tim Federowicz followed with a two-run home run to account for the Dodgers’ runs.

Yasiel Puig had perhaps his worst offensive performance as a Dodger; he went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts.

The Giants had a run taken off the board in the first inning because of a rarely seen blunder. With Gregor Blanco on third base with one out, Buster Posey came up to the plate and doubled Blanco in. But Dodger Manager Don Mattingly protested the play, arguing that Posey batted out of order, as per the official scorecard presented to umpires before the game.

Blanco was sent to back to third, an out was recorded, and the Dodgers got out of the inning unscathed.
