Golf: Daly in Toshiba Classic field

John Daly, whose 20 PGA Tour victories include the 1995 British Open and the 1991 PGA Championship, will make his first appearance in the Toshiba Classic, Oct. 5-9, at the Newport Beach Country Club.

Daly, 50, has played in eight events on the Champions Tour, producing three top-25 finishes.

He last played in Southern California at the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open. His last victory came at the 2004 Buick Invitational.

Daly is known as much for his freewheeling spirit and charismatic personality as his reputation as a prodigious hitter.

“The Toshiba Classic has always been one of the tournaments players look forward to most because of the level of competition, golf course and fans,” Jeff Purser, executive director, Hoag Charity Sports – Toshiba Classic, said in a statement. “The addition of John Daly and his powerful game, will bring a level of excitement fans have yet to see at the Toshiba Classic.”

The Toshiba Classic “Breakfast with a Champion” will take place Oct. 4 at 7 a.m. at the Balboa Bay Resort. Daly joins a list of golf legends who previously served as guest of honor for the event, including Mark O’Meara, Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Gary Player, and Chi Chi Rodriguez.

A limited number of 10-person tables are still available at a cost of $1,500. To purchase tickets, email Gus Scheidemann at: [email protected].

The Toshiba Classic, in its 22nd year, moved from late October to early October this year, leading into the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.

Tickets are on sale at https://www.toshibaclassic.com/tickets. One-day grounds tickets are $25 if purchased in advance and $30 if purchased at the event. The Newport Beach Country Club will be closed to the public on Monday and Tuesday of tournament week.

The Toshiba Classic’s lead charity and host is Hoag Charity Sports and Hoag Hospital Foundation. This year’s tournament proceeds will be directed to the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes center at Hoag
