College Roundup: Golden West baseball stuns Saddleback

Golden West 3, Saddleback 2

Junior Aguilar hit a two-run home run to help the host Rustlers upset the top-ranked team in Southern California in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday.

GWC (9-7, 1-0 in conference) scored three in the fourth inning, all unearned, and three Rustlers’ pitchers limited the Gauchos (12-5, 0-1) to four hits.

Taylor Franzman allowed two runs over 62/3 innings.

Golden West reliever Adam Moses got the final out of the seventh and Steven Knapp did not allow a hit in two scoreless relief innings to post his first save.

Myles Moran (one run batted in), Nick Tringrides, Jeff Zoradani and Jake Hinzo added hits for GWC.

UC Irvine 7, Loyola Marymount 6

LOS ANGELES — Senior Evan Cassolato hit a game-winning three-run home run in the ninth to cap his four-for-five night and lift the visiting Anteaters in a nonconference game Tuesday.

Cassolato had five runs batted in for the winners (7-4), who rallied from a 6-2 deficit. He is now batting .522 this season (21 for 41).

Mikey Duarte was four for five and Jake Hazard was there for five with one RBI for UCI.

Calvin Faucher pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save and freshman Andre Pallante earned his first collegiate win.

LMU is 6-7.

UC Irvine 5, Portland 3

The host Anteaters scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to erase a 3-2 deficit and complete a sweep of the three-game nonconference series on Sunday.

Keston Hiura was two for three and Evan Cassolato was two for four with one run batted in for UCI, for which Cole Kreuter drove in two runs.

Michael Martin earned the victory with two scoreless relief innings and Calvin Faucher worked a scoreless ninth to post his fourth save of the season.

Freshman Cole Spear started and allowed one run on four hits in four innings.

Portland fell to 1-9, while UCI improved to 6-4.

Bethesda 8, Vanguard 4

Brandon Sandoval was three for four with a solo home run to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game on Tuesday.

Michael Fuchs (one run batted in) and Brock Eissman were both two for four for the No. 20-ranked Lions (16-9).

Bethesda, which scored four runs in the first inning, improved to 9-7.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Riverside 92, UC Irvine 60

LONG BEACH — Sophomore Andee Ritter had 20 points in the opening round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Tuesday at Long Beach State.

Ritter was seven for 15 from the field, including five for 10 from three-point range for the No. 8-seeded Anteaters (5-26).

Senior Irene Chavez had 13 points, while senior Brittany Glassow chipped in six points and six rebounds for UCI, which completes the season under first-year coach Tamara Inoue.

No. 5-seeded UC Riverside (16-14), advances to the quarterfinals.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Michigan tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — No. 6-ranked UC Irvine defeated No. 9 Pacific and No. 7 Michigan on Sunday to complete the tournament 4-0.

In the 8-6 win over UOP, Julie Swieca and McKenna Mitchell had two goals apiece for UCI (13-6), which received 12 saves from Jenna Phreaner.

In a 11-10 win over the host Wolverines, Mitchell had four goals and Kelsey Thornton added three.

UCI plays host to Hawaii in a Big West Conference game on Friday at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University topped Doane, 8-0 and 9-4, in nonconference play on Tuesday.

No statistics were immediately available.

The Lions (18-4) have won four straight and 15 of their last 16.
