College Roundup: Vanguard’s Isaac keys baseball win

Vanguard senior pitcher Sean Isaac allowed two runs on eight hits in eight innings to improve to 11-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference game on Friday.
Isaac struck out seven and walked two and the No. 11-ranked Lions’ offense made the most of its four hits. Isaac is tied for the NAIA lead with 11 wins.
Jose Rojas was one for three with a run batted in, while Brandon Sandoval and Brock Eissman also had RBIs for the winners (32-9-1, 17-5 in conference), who extended their winning streak to nine games.
Rojas doubled in a run to cap a two-run sixth and help the Lions erase a 2-1 deficit.
Vanguard senior closer Michael Jordan pitched a perfect ninth to record his NAIA-leading 15th save.
William Jessup is 3-29, 3-19.
The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

LONG BEACH — Host Long Beach State scored in the 12th inning of the Big West Conference game at Blair Field on Friday.
Eric Hutting singled with the bases loaded for the game-winner.
UCI (19-11, 3-4 in conference) seized the lead when Cole Kreuter doubled in two runs in the fifth inning.
But Long Beach (20-12, 4-3) tied it in the eighth.
UCI starter Elliot Surrey allowed three hits in 7 1/3 innings. Calvin Faucher blew the save in the eighth and Ben Ritchey was tagged with the loss.
Keston Hiura was four for five and Grant Palmer was two for four for the ‘Eaters.
The series resumes Saturday at 2 p.m.

The host Pirates clinched the outright Pacific Coast Conference title with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 sweep in the regular-season finale Friday.
Jordan Hoppe had 12 kills and two aces, while Adrian Faitalia chipped in eight kills on 11 swings, and two aces.
Jake Adams had 20 assists for OCC (20-2, 13-1 in conference), which will compete in the state semifinals on Aug. 28 at Los Angeles Pierce College against an opponent to be determined.
SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
ATHERTON — The visiting Lions won the first game, 11-4, but dropped the second, 4-3, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Friday at Menlo College.
In the opener, Kaitlin Estes was three for three with a home run, two runs batted in and three runs scored to pace the Lions’ 13-hit attack.
Kristyn Whitley was two for four with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, while Samantha Shaffer was two for four with two RBIs for the visitors (27-19, 8-9 in conference).
Summer Penner was two for four with two runs, and Amber Huffman was two for three with one RBI and one run for Vanguard.
In the second game, Shaffer was two for three with a solo home run, while Estes was one for three with a home run and two RBIs.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Two meets
UC Irvine athletes competed in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach on Friday.
At the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Bridget Devaney finished 26th in the hammer throw with an effort of 177 feet, 5 inches.
Marisa McGinnis was 28th in the javelin (123-11) and Kelly Magana was 29th (123-7).
At Azusa Pacific University, Lauren Hall was 42nd in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 14.02 seconds to pace the Anteaters.
The Beach Invitational wraps up competition Saturday.

Double-Duty for ‘Eaters Friday
UC Irvine pulled double-duty Friday as the Anteaters competed in the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific.
Matt Seawright was 16th in the hammer throw with a mark of 190 feet, 10 inches
Mike Graf was 36th in the javelin (164-4) and Jake Williams was 41st in the 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 53.48 seconds.
Saturday marks the final day of competition at the Beach Invitational.
