College Roundup: UCI baseball rallies to beat UCSB

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 8, UC Santa Barbara 7

SANTA BARBARA – The visiting Anteaters overcame a 7-2 deficit through six innings to halt a seven-game losing streak in the Big West Conference game Friday.

Devin Pettengill drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly as UCI scored two in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to rally.

Both teams had three errors, which produced four unearned runs for a UCI offense led by junior Keston Hiura.

Hiura was two for three with a triple, two walks, and three runs batted in for the winners (13-18, 2-3 in conference).

Mikey Duarte was two for five with one RBI and one run, while Ryan Johnston was two for four with a run and a stolen base for UCI.

Lee Dailin scored twice and drove in a run for UCI, for whom Andre Pallante pitched one perfect relief inning to earn the win and is now 3-2.

Senior closer Calvin Faucher worked a scoreless ninth to earn his ninth save of the season, his first since March 19.

UCSB is 14-18, 3-5.

The two teams conclude the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Orange Coast 8, Santa Barbara 6

SANTA BARBARA – Jacob White was two for five with three runs batted in to pace the visiting Pirates in the nonconference game Friday.

Domenic Donato was two for four and scored twice, while Chris Ceballos drove in two for the winners (26-7), ranked No. 2 in the state.

Austin Moore pitched three relief innings to improve to 2-0, while Blair Lewis earned his third save.

Santa Barbara is 20-14.

Golden West 7, Moorpark 2

MOORPARK – Jeremiah Vison was three for four with one run batted in and one stolen base to pace the visiting Rustlers in the nonconference game Friday.

Zakk Morgan was two for two with one run and Chris Rodriguez had two RBIs for the Rustlers (17-17).

Stephen Knapp allowed two runs in five innings to earn the win and improve to 6-3.

Moorpark is 17-16.

William Jessup 4, Vanguard 1

STOCKTON – Trai Patrick was two for four with one run batted in to pace the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday night.

Vanguard is 17-17, 16-8 in conference.

WJU is 9-28, 4-19.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Golden West 4, Orange Coast 1

The Rustlers’ tandem of Kate Stanjevich and Jasmine Gonzalez topped Megan Ritchie and Jadelyn Forgiarini, 21-19, 21-19, in the No. 1 match at the Orange Empire Conference contest on Friday at Huntington Beach.

Golden West twosomes Ashleigh Astaros and Erica Cantley (No. 3), Baileigh Graham and Amanda Sosa (No. 4) and Samantha Ureno and Melissa Martinez (No. 5) also posted wins.

OCC’s lone win came in the No. 2 match, in which Measha Lindstrand and Sierra Lim rallied for an 11-21, 21-16, 15-11 victory.

Golden West is 10-5, 4-1 in conference, tied for second place with Irvine Valley, one game behind Cypress.

OCC is 6-6, 3-2.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Santiago Canyon

The host Pirates closed out the regular season with a 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 Orange Empire Conference sweep on Friday.

It was the 17th straight win for OCC (18-1, 8-0 in conference), the No. 1-ranked team in the state which won the inaugural OEC title.

OCC will be home for a Southern California Regional playoff match on Friday against an opponent to be determined.

Chris Guithues had nine blocks and six kills, while fellow middle blocker Chris Orem had nine kills on 11 swings for the Pirates.

Cole Aidnik led the winners with 11 digs.

Santiago Canyon is 2-14, 0-8.
