Locals move to semis
Costa Mesa resident Annie Radeva and Newport Beach residents Austin Di Giulio, Max McKennon and Danielle Willson have all advanced to the semifinals of their respective divisions at the Costa Mesa Summer Junior Classic tennis tournament.
Radeva is the top seed in girls’ 16 singles and she won twice Wednesday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center, defeating No. 8-seeded Barbara Mancera of Mexico, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Radeva plays No. 5-seeded Rachel Kim of Orange in a semifinal match at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Di Giulio is unseeded in boys’ 16 singles, but he outlasted No. 7-seeded Tom Witteveen of La Mesa, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, in a quarterfinal match Wednesday. Di Giulio will play Joachim Samson of the Philippines in a semifinal match at 10 a.m. Thursday.
McKennon, the No. 3 seed in boys’ 12 singles, topped Kun Teng Tche of Hong Kong, 6-3, 6-4, in a quarterfinal match Wednesday. McKennon faces top-seeded Ivan Smith of Chula Vista in the semifinals, at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Willson defeated No. 5-seeded Mikayla Rinker of Fullerton, 6-4, 6-3, in a quarterfinal match Wednesday. Willson, who is unseeded, plays top-seeded Isabella Oedekerk of San Juan Capistrano in an 8 a.m. semifinal Thursday.
Radeva and her partner Nicole Yermanos of Encinitas, the No. 2 seeds in girls’ 16 doubles, have a semifinal match against Katianna Chang and Alisa Takatori of Irvine at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Wilson and her partner, Katherine Nguyen of Westminster, play top-seeded Kristina Evloeva of Torrance and Emilia Gorczyca of Laguna Niguel in a girls’ 14 doubles semifinal at 2 p.m. Corona del Mar residents Paige Kenerson and Siena Sharf play the No. 2 seeds, Shreya and Shweta Kumar of Irvine, in the other girls’ 14 doubles semifinal.
Newport Coast resident Max Pham and his partner Kenan Torlic, the No. 2 seeds in boys’ 16 doubles, have a semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Corona del Mar High incoming sophomore Chaz Downing and his partner, Maxwell Cancilla of Huntington Beach, play in the other semifinal against top-seeded Jordan Sadowsky of Rancho Santa Fe and Brandon Yang of San Diego.
Championship matches for all singles and doubles divisions are scheduled for Friday.
