Tellez’s hat trick paces Laguna

The Laguna Beach boys’ soccer team jumped to a big lead on visiting Sage Hill in a nonleague game and went on to earn its first victory of the 2011-12 season by blanking the Lightning, 5-0, at Guyer Field on Wednesday.

The Breakers bolted to a 4-0 halftime advantage to run their record to 1-0-1. Sophomore midfielder/forward Chris Tellez led the scoring with three goals. Senior midfielder/forward Joseph Rousseau and senior defender Brogan O’Bryan both scored once.

“I was happy with today’s result and it was a decent performance for our opening home game of the season,” Laguna Coach Daniel Richards said. “We still have a lot of areas to work on, but this was definitely a great way to build on the Dana Hills game last week.

“With such a young squad and so many new faces on the team, it’s important they continue working hard to learn our system of play and how to implement it consistently during games. We scored some nice goals and always looked dangerous going forward while staying disciplined at the back.”

The Breakers opened their season Dec. 2 and played rival Dana Hills to a 1-1 tie on the Dolphins’ home field. Laguna trailed, 1-0 halftime but drew even in the second half when sophomore midfielder Jake Hexburg scored after picking up a loose ball in front of the Dana Hills goal.

Girls’ Soccer

The Breakers took visiting San Juan Hills to the limit Tuesday at Guyer Field but dropped a 1-0 nonleague decision to the Stallions.

“On the surface, we had a heart-breaking 1-0 loss; however in the final analysis, the squad had a terrific match on the field,” said Laguna Coach Bill Rolfing, who had a full squad in action for the first time this season.

The Breakers outshot the Stallions, 10-5, and “established enough offense to win the match,” Rolfing said. The Stallions scored the lone goal of the game on a long, free kick that just escaped the reach of freshman goalie Kylie George.

George is one of four freshman on the 2011-12 squad. The Breakers also have four sophomores that add to a “young, starting seven” lineup, Rolfing said.

Laguna continues play Friday and Saturday at the Ocean View Holiday Tournament, with games against Marina and Long Beach Millikan. At the tournament last week, the Breakers used a goal by Paul to earn a 1-1 tie against Huntington Beach, but with their lineup depleted, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Tustin.

Next week, the Breakers play a 6:15 p.m. nonleague home match Thursday against Laguna Hills.

Girls’ Water Polo

The Breakers played their season home opener Wednesday and defeated Dana Hills, 16-6, in nonleague play. Laguna led, 6-1, after one quarter, 8-3, at the half and took a 12-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Senior attacker Yoshi Andersen and freshman center Mackenzie Fischer both scored six goals to lead the way. Senior utility Melena Masson scored three goals and junior attacker Mackenzie Baldridge had one goal. Junior attacker Lexie Del Toro had had two assists and two steals and junior defender Sydney Saxe had two assists and a steal. Sophomore goalie Jenna Knott recorded eight saves.

The Breakers have two tough nonleague games on tap next week. First, they’ll take on Edison at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at Ocean View High. They’ll host Mater Dei at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 16.
