Briefs: Brothers capture crowns
Monday was quite a day in the Di Giulio household.
Joseph Di Giulio and his younger brother, Austin, each won junior tennis titles at the Mike Agassi âNo Quitâ Championships in Las Vegas.
The Newport Beach residents each had impressive victories in their final match. Top-seeded Joseph Di Guilio came back to beat No. 2-seeded William Griffith of Fresno, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5, in the boysâ 16-and-under championship match.
Austin Di Giulio was unseeded, but he breezed past Zummy Bauer of Georgia, 6-1, 6-1, to win the boysâ 12s title.
Joseph is ranked No. 49 nationally by the United States Tennis Assn. in boysâ 16s. He also had to come back to win his quarterfinal match in the tournament, a three-set affair against Logan Staggs of Tracy.
Joseph and his doubles partner, Benjamin Donovan of Tennessee, finished third in boysâ 16s doubles at the Mike Agassi tournament.
Austin, ranked No. 12 in Southern California in boysâ 12s, did not lose a set in claiming the Las Vegas singles crown. He and his doubles partner, Gavin Spencer of San Juan Capistrano, finished second after they were edged in the final by top-seeded Michael Bautista of Washington and Joe Hardwicke of Oregon, 9-8 (7), in the eight-game pro set format.

Lions in GSAC Tournament
The Vanguard University menâs and womenâs soccer teams will compete in their respective Golden State Athletic Conference tournaments this week.
The VU menâs team (12-6, 6-3 in conference) is the No. 4 seed and plays host to No. 5-seeded Biola (10-5-2, 5-4) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The VU womenâs team (12-4-1, 4-4-1) finished sixth in conference. It will visit No. 3-seeded Azusa Pacific (11-2-1, 7-2) in Tuesdayâs quarterfinal round at 2 p.m.
The Lions men lost to Biola, 2-1, on Saturday.
The Lions women lost to No. 6-ranked APU, 1-0, in overtime on Oct. 18.
Junior Kevin Cornwall leads the VU men with 11 goals and three assists. Kyle OâBrien has eight goals and seven assists.
Senior Gabriela Valles leads the VU women with 11 goals and six assists.
